Just When I Need Him!

But I am poor and needy; yet the LORD thinketh upon me:  thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God. Psalm 40: 17.

Blessed LORD, how much we need You!  Please stay close to us and bless us for Your name and mercies’ sake.  Amen.

Have You ever needed the LORD?  You may ask yourself what kind of a question is that?  But it is not such a strange question if you stop and think how often we try to do things on our own, without even consulting with the LORD.  And not only in the small matters of life, but in major decisions.  Oftentimes, like Samson, in the selection of a life-partner, we select someone of our choice, not because we prayed to God and He provided; but because “she [he] pleaseth me well” Judges 14: 3).  As a consequence of these choices, we come to the end of the road, only to find that even if we ignore Him in life; we will need Him at the hour of death (Judges 16: 28).

What about when troubles befall us; do we go to the LORD first, and ask Him for help?  Or, do we try everything, and everyone, and when all else has failed, and we cannot afford any other remedy; we go in search of Him (Mark 5: 25-28)?  If we do, like Samson, we will find, that, (29) all along, it was He, that we needed, after all!

Let us take a look at our finances.  We are down and out.  Sometimes, we are gathering a few sticks to prepare the last meal for ourselves, and our loved ones.  But we hear about a short-cut to solve that problem; it is called the “Lotto!”  The LORD’s method takes too long; or so we think (Malachi 3: 8-10).  So we try the short-cut, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in [our] eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains” (1 Timothy 6: 10).  Then we find out that all along, “it is He who gives [us] power to get wealth that He may establish His covenant [with us]…” (Deuteronomy 8: 18).

And these are only some of the areas of our lives where we make decisions without so much as checking with the LORD, regarding the way we ought to go.  Personally, some of my greatest anxieties, have come as a result, of not first finding out what the LORD’s will for me, in that particular area of my life, was.  Many times, the lack of attention to His will has brought me much pain and regret.  However, it has also been at these times, that I have needed Him the most.  On more than one occasion, I have found out the hard way, that His way is the best way.  it is at these times, that, borrowing the words of the song-writer I have exclaimed:

“Just when I need Him, Jesus is near, Just when I falter, just when I fear;  Ready to help me, ready to cheer, Just when I need Him most.

Refrain:  Just when I need Him most, Just when I need Him most; Jesus is near to comfort and cheer, Just when I need Him most.”  William Poole/Charles H. Gabriel.
