The God Of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”  And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”  Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel:  ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.  This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations,’ ” Exodus 3: 14, 15, NKJV.

Dear God, the eternal One; may we hear Your voice as we study Your Word; for Christ’s sake.  Amen.

As we continue in our series, we came upon this gem, “The God of Abraham Praise.”  This is one of those rich, melodious, ancient hymns; whose melody and words combine, to lift the soul to great heights during worship.  If you add to this, the sentiments from which it drew its inspiration, you could soar to even greater heights!  It is God speaking to Moses at the burning bush.  Just imagine this scene with your mind’s eye:  A fire is burning; there is a bush in the midst of the fire, but, the bush is not burning.  It is a sight worthy of a double-take; which is exactly what Moses does; he looks, and then turns and looks again.  But not even a second look is quite enough.  He draws near.

And then it happens!  God speaks to Moses out of the burning bush, and during the conversation introduces Himself by the most awesome name:  I AM!  There have been so many attempts to define this brief, but all-encompassing name, with very feeble results, in my humble opinion.  Perhaps that is why God gave Moses a name with which we could identify, “The God of Abraham…, Isaac, and …Jacob.”  Enjoy the hymn which His name inspired.

                                        The God of Abraham Praise

The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above; Ancient of everlasting days, and God of love;  Jehovah!  Great I AM!  By earth and heaven confessed; I bow and bless the sacred name, forever blest.

The God of Abraham praise, at whose supreme command from earth I rise, and seek the joys at His right hand; I all on earth forsake, Its wisdom, fame, and power; and Him my only portion make, my shield and tower.

The whole triumphant host give thanks to God on high; “Hail Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!”  They ever cry; Hail Abraham’s God and mine!  I join the heavenly lays; all might and majesty are Thine, and endless praise.  Thomas Olivers/Jewish Melody by Meyer Lyon.
