Returning Home

“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!  I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.  Make me like one of your hired servants.’ ” Luke 15: 17-19, NKJV.

Lord, we pray that You will keep us in our “right minds” that we will never wander away from You and the flock of safety.  In Jesus’ name we ask these favors.  Amen.

Today we come to the end of our series on hymns that have been inspired by texts of the Bible.  We hope that you have been blessed by these hymns and the texts that inspired them, as much as we have enjoyed bringing them to you.  The hymn for today, found its inspiration in verse 18; I added verses 17 and 19, for clarity.

Luke chapter fifteen, is one of the favorite chapters in the entire Bible.  The parable of The Lost Sheep, and The Prodigal Son, are well known, and much loved, stories; among children, and adults, alike.  What always catches my attention in this story is the fact that the Bible distinctly states, that the prodigal son, “came to himself!”  What a God that finds it hard to let go of His children!  He will follow them into the foreign country of sin, to facilitate their “coming back home.”

Did not Jesus leave the heavenly country, and come to enemy territory to “seek and to save that which was lost?”  And we know that the Father was in the Son, “reconciling the world unto Himself.”  So all heaven is interested in the home- coming of the sinner.  I am convinced of this; as no one can come to the Son, except the Father gives them to Him (John 6: 37).  This well known hymn, has been used in many an evangelistic campaign to bring conviction to sinners, and sinners to the Lord.  May you be blessed by it!

                                              Lord, I’m Coming Home

I’ve wandered far away from God, Now I’m coming home;  the paths of sin too long I’ve trod; Lord I’m coming home.

Refrain:  Coming home, coming home never more to roam; open wide Thine arms of love; Lord, I’m coming home.

I’ve wasted many precious years, Now I’m coming home; I now repent with bitter tears; Lord, I’m coming home.

I’m tired of sin and straying, Lord, now I’m coming home; I’ll trust Thy love, believe Thy word; Lord I’m coming home.

My only hope, my only plea, now I’m coming home; that Jesus died, and died for me; Lord, I’m coming home.

I need His cleansing blood I know, Now I’m coming home; O wash me whiter than the snow; Lord, I’m coming home.

If you have wandered away from home, Jesus awaits you with arms wide open.  Please come home before it is too late!
