“The Lord is My Helper”

So we may boldly say “ The LORD is my helper; I will not fear.  What can man do to me?” Hebrews 13: 6, NKJV

Dear Savior, how thankful we are to You for everything that You have done for us.  Please give us the assurance that having You as our Helper will take care of all our needs.  For Christ’s sake.  Amen

It is amazing how much was involved in Christ’s coming to our world!  He was given to humanity!  He came to show us the face of God!  A week or so ago we saw Him as an ever-present Help.  Today we see Him as our Helper!  Similar, but not the same.  I suspected that there was much more to the idea of God as our Helper than meet the eye.  Upon searching, I found that the root-word for helper also carries a possible connotation of support, rope, or cable!  Our Helper is able. available, and reliable

“We have an [A]nchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll; Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”

Now we can better understand what Paul meant when He said:  We may boldly say…”I will not be afraid.  What can [mortals] do to me?”  He is our Anchor when the sea of life becomes turbulent!  He is our Support when the arm of flesh fail us!  He is the Rope to which we cling, with the full assurance that it will not giveway!  He is the Cable, not created, but self-existing!  It will not break, when our ship hits against the rocks of depression.  Therefore, He is all together trustworthy!

When He consented to be our Helper, He did not merely assume the name; He became the name.  He said, “I came not to be served, but to serve.” He would serve us to the very end, by draining the dregs from the cup of suffering.  Having the opportunity to come down from the cross and save Himself, and taunted by the mob to do so, He would stay on the cross in order to save us.  He said:  “It is for this reason that I have come to this hour.”

The preceding verse:  ” ‘Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you[,]seems to suggest that everything we will ever need is to be found in our Helper.  When He is present, and He promises to be always present; five loaves and two fishes provide enough food to feed five thousand men, besides women and children!  And they gather twelve baskets of leftovers!  When He divides what we offer Him, it multiplies!  We can therefore “be content with such things as we have.”

During this festive season may we see Heaven’s Gift in a new light!  As we contemplate all that His birth, and death, purchased for us, may our faith increase.  May we be willing to bring our gifts to Him and watch Him multiply them for His glory, and the blessing of others. In so doing, we will also be blessed!
