Just Like Me

For verily He took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a faithful and merciful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. Hebrews 2: 16-18.

Dear Father, how we thank You that You were willing to become like Your children, that in turn, Your children could become like You. Please help us, we pray; in the name of Jesus! Amen.

It is so heart-warming to think that my Savior, would want to be made, just like me! What about me could be so appealing to the Creator of the universe? He who had the power to speak everything into being (Psalm 33: 6-9); the God who was capable of breathing into a body made from the dust of the earth, His own breath, and watch that body come alive; would one day take upon His glorious body – a body of clay!

What is even harder to understand, is the fact that although we were created in God’s image and likeness, sin has limited us – yet Jesus accepted the “body that was prepared for [Him],” a body with limitations. Even more surprising is the fact that it was four thousand years after sin had entered our world and done its work of devastation, that Jesus took upon Himself our frail, and broken, humanity – a body like mine.

Whenever the more takes on the least, it is usually because there is something in it for the more. But when Jesus, (the More), took upon Himself our humanity (the least); it was because there was something in it for us – eternal life! He would live our life, with all the temptations, humiliations, limitations, to show us a better way! Our Scripture reads, “For verily He took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.” He went where His “creation was in crisis.” He became a man, in order to rescue men and women, boys and girls, in crisis!

He became our perfect High Priest. He could stand before the Father and plead: “Father, they have confessed their sins, and My blood covers these sins. They are no longer accounted guilty!” And because He had walked where we walked, and suffered as we suffered, the Father could accept His sacrifice, the shedding of His innocent blood, on our behalf! Our merciful High Priest!

But He can do even more. He can come to the rescue of those who are tempted. In the hour of trial Jesus can stand between us and the tempter. He can whisper in our ears the words we need to hear to escape the wiles of the Adversary. He can speak our language, because He became one with us; yet without sin. Why did He become just like me?  So that you and I can become just like Him. Why did He do it? There is only one reason that I can think of; He did it because of love!
