When God Blesses!

He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land-your grain new wine and oil-the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land that he swore to your forefathers to give you. You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be a male or female barren among you or among your livestock. Deuteronomy 7: 13, 14, NIV

Dear God, we are anxious to hear a word from You. We know that the entrance of Your Word brings light, and life, and joy! So we wait to hear You speak to our hearts in the study of Your Word today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Many of you have heard, the song, “You can’t beat God’s giving, no matter how you try.” Those are not only words set to music, that is the gospel truth! “The more you give, is the more He gives to you, so keep on giving, because it’s really true! You can’t beat God’s giving – no matter how You try!” The law of heaven is the law of kindness. “God is love” (1 John 4: 8). Therefore, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son . . .” (John 3: 16). “For . . . unto us a Son is given . . ” (Isaiah 9: 6).

Our Scripture today talks about the manner in which God blesses. He blesses and increases. It would seem to me that the text is saying that God’s blessings multiply! He promised to bless them and increase their numbers. He would not only increase their number (population), He would also bless the fruit of their womb. The text seems to be saying that every person who was born among them, was born with a promised blessing! Now you cannot beat that! My grandmother had a saying, that, “God does not send birds without berries.” God’s blessing to His people sounds similar:   “God does not send babies without blessings!” I say Amen to that!

But the blessings continue to multiply!

He will bless the crops of your land Their vegetation would be blessed. Whatever they planted, it was a guarantee, that they would have a harvest! That meant that the “former and the latter rain” would fall in their season. Rain, as we studied a day or two ago was a sign of God’s favor.  God would show favor to His people by giving them an abundant harvest!

He will bless your grain, new wine and oilthe new wine and oil were emblems of prosperity, spiritually, and materially, respectively. The wine, an emblem of His shed blood, is a promise of our healing (Isaiah 53: 5). “He anoints my head with oil, my cup runs over” (Psalm 23: 5). He will bless us until the blessings overflow!

He will bless the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks – which provides sacrifices fit for a King! It means that the light of our family altars would always be burning bright in worship to God! We would always keep fresh in our memory, and the memory of our family members, the sacrifice that was made on behalf of all humanity, by offering our sacrifices of praise to the Lord!

He will bless [you] above all peoples – “Test me in this says the LORD Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,’ says the LORD Almighty. ‘Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,’ says the LORD Almighty” (Malachi 3: 10-12, emphasis provided).

There shall not be a male or female barren among you or among your livestock. Fertility was considered the favor of God, perhaps in a superlative manner.  “[Children] are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are [children] born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate” (Psalm 127: 3-5). This blessing of fertility was promised to their livestock as well.

When God blesses, He does it graciously, and in abundance! And He has a blessing just for you!

  1. I love the 2nd-last point of replacing complaining with gratitude. I do this sometimes. It’s not easy at first, but then it gets easier and you definitely feel better! Great reminder.
