Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.’ Mark 9: 24, NIV.
Dear God, in this time of skepticism and doubt, our prayer is that You will teach us how to take You at Your Word. In the blessed name of Jesus we humbly pray. Amen.
Most of us are acquainted with this story; and I am almost certain that we have all felt the pain of this father. Who knows for how many years he watched his son being buffeted by the evil one. Who knows how many times he saw him foaming at the mouth, with his eyes turned backward. Who knows how many times he looked at him believing that he was dead. That could make anyone stop believing, or forget how to believe.
But we parents, are die-hards! We do not know how to give up on our children! So we can understand the behavior of this father. This story is filled to overflowing with great lessons on faith, for all of us. The father says to Jesus, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us” In other words, “I do not even dare to hope any more.” Can you blame him? He has seen his son in this condition, and at times worse (22), “from childhood” (21)! So, even in the presence of the Life-giver, he doubts! But our loving Savior, ever willing that we should reach our full potential, responds in a way that will guide him him to the place where a miracle can take place: Jesus responds: ” ‘If you can?’ ” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.” “I have the power to help you. If you can believe, there is no limits to what I can do for you!”
Then came this father’s response with which all of us can identify: “LORD, I do believe, Please help me to overcome my inability to believe.” Have the cares of life made it difficult for you to believe? Like you, there are so many of us, who go through this situation from time to time! But God is still the same. He has the ability to help you to believe, and also receive your miracle! Go to Him today!
