The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1: 29, NKJV.
Dear God, please cover us with Your blood and prepare us to share Your love with others! In the name of Jesus Christ we pray! Amen.
I thought it would be nice to begin the New Year with the Good News – “Your debt has been paid in full!” We live in a rather indebted society. In all my years of life, I have not seen, or heard, of as many foreclosures! So many people have lost their jobs, their homes, their life savings, their sense of security. There seems to be no way out of the financial black hole in which they find themselves. What was so frightening, is that for many people, it happened so suddenly! It seems that one day they were on top of the world, and the next, they were buried beneath their debts!
When our first parents sinned, they too, found themselves suddenly go from a paradise home to a prison of their own making. They had incurred spiritual bankruptcy; they were buried beneath the load of their sins! On that very day grace was made available to them: ” ‘ ” . . . And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel” ‘ ” (Genesis 3: 15).
So that day when John saw Jesus walking toward him, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he recognized the promised Seed, and declared that there, before their very eyes, was the One and Only Son of God; the only One who could bring them out of spiritual bankruptcy – the only One, who could pay their debt in full! What was especially meaningful, was the fact that there was nothing that they could do to earn this gift. It was a gift of grace!
In this year 2010, may we rejoice in the knowledge that there is a gift certificate awaiting each person in heaven’s store! All we need to claim it, is faith in the Son of God, the Sacrificial Lamb, who came, and with His blood, took away your sin and mine! Praise God! Thanks to this gift, we can begin the New Year with a clean slate – because our debt has been paid in full!
