I Will Sing A New Song!

He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, and will trust in the LORD. Psalm 40: 3, NKJV

Holy God, we offer You our praise and our worship as we sit in silence and listen to Your voice speaking Words of life to our souls; For this we give You thanks in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

The word new usually fills its hearers with hope – unless, they were not ready for a change. When I worked for the US Army, I heard with some frequency the phrase, “Why fix it if it is not broken.” This was usually referring to some new policy that was in the making.

For most human beings change is not a welcome ingredient in their already complex life, or, extremely simple way of life. In either situation, at least, they know what to expect. But when a new feature is added, it usually represents – a change from the familiar – and therefore – some sort of dis-comfort. Leaving our comfort zone is never welcome, but often expedient. However, in our verse for today, the psalmist seems to be well pleased with his “new song”. God Himself has put this song in his mouth – it is a song of praise!

If we return to the first two verses of the psalm, we will get a glimpse of what has inspired this new song. The psalmist has been delivered by God. He has come out of a miry, horrible pit! Therefore, he attributes the composition of the song to His Deliverer, “He [God] has put a new song in my mouth”. He could not sing this song in captivity, for it is a song of deliverance!

The psalmist had been crying to God. We do not know how long, but it would appear that it must have been a while, “I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry” (1). (Emphasis provided). The  statement “I waited patiently”, gives us a hint, that the answer did not come immediately. There was a period of waiting.

In the life of a Christian the waiting period is extremely significant. If we use this time adequately, we could learn to see and hear things quite differently than we did before. Our priorities begin to shift; our experiences begin to acquire new significance. The lyrics of our songs undergo a change. Sometimes we come out of the waiting period with a completely new song.

What is so significant about the end result of the waiting and receiving, is that not only we are blessed by this song –  others are as well – “Many will see it and fear, and will trust in the LORD.” Hallelujah! So let us sing our new song my friends, and bless the world!

  1. My dear friend,
Aloha! Praise the Lord for His faithfulness. I have greatly missed hearing from you and from God speaking through your heart. Somehow it draws me closer to Him as well as you.
I know that this year has shown me some light at the end of the tunnel. I can feel less weight and I know who has taken the burden. I sense that you are doing better in some way. Is it your health, your family’s safety, your ministry?
The thought that came to me from this devotional is that of “an end”. We can be SURE that some day God will bring an end to all the miry troubles. And if it comes in this life of ours, others can praise the Lord. In the meantime we will keep waiting patiently and know He will hear our cry and answer, for His name’s sake.
Aloha ke Akua (God is love),
