Why The Shepherds?

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:8-11, NKJV).

Heavenly Father, You are such an impartial parent. At the foot of the cross the ground is level. Thank You for loving each of us just as we are, and using us to bring glory to Yourself. What a privilege is ours to be used by You! For this we give You thanks in the Holy name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.

There were shepherds living “in the same country” where the Christ child was born. And it was to these lowly men that God sent His heavenly messengers to herald the birth of Heaven’s “Prince of peace.”

“In the same country” there were also priests, Pharisees, Sadducees, and other religious leaders. Yet they were apparently oblivious to the greatest event of all time – the advent of God’s Son in human form.

“In the same country” there were the very affluent who could have been given the honor of receiving the Gift of heaven into their homes. Nevertheless it was in the poor and lowly abode of the beasts of the field that the Creator of heaven and earth was to make His entrance as a helpless babe and spend His first night on planet earth.

“[Into] the same country” came wise men from the East bringing their gifts to welcome the Son of God, while “His own” were not aware that the “fullness of time” had come.

We can all be in the same place and yet not all receive a blessing. And it is not because God plays favorites. As Scripture declares:  “Then Peter opened his mouth and said: ‘“In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him”‘ (Acts 10: 34, 35).

Scripture further declares:  “He came to His own,and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11, 12).

He came as a babe once. He is coming back as King of kings and Lord of lords for all who are ready to receive Him as Savior and Lord of their lives. Whether you are rich or poor is not important. The shepherds were lowly. The wise men from the East were well to do. They were willing to accept Him  and they were blessed. If you are willing, He is able to save you to the uttermost. I pray that if you have not yet accepted Him as your Savior and Lord you will not allow this Christmas season to pass before doing so. You will be glad that you did. Blessings!
