“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21).
Dear Heavenly Father, with all my heart I seek You. I desire to know Your will, and to follow where You lead. Please be our teacher as we learn the valuable lesson of using our tongues with the one purpose of bringing You glory and blessing others! In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen,
During our study of the tongue we will be going to different books of the Bible, and looking at both the positive and negative uses of the tongue. Why? Because Scripture teaches that the person who (love the power of the tongue) will eat its fruit. All of a sudden the idiom, eat your words, takes on a whole greater meaning! Our words, whether for good or for evil, also bring forth a harvest, that affects us!
Have you ever given someone a piece of your mind, only to realize that it did not produce the satisfaction you thought it would? All of a sudden what felt sweet in your mouth became bitter in your stomach? Chances are, you are savoring the taste of fruit from your own harvest.
Negativity is negativity, no matter whom it is aimed at. And anyone who comes under its influence will be affected by it, including the one who propagated it!
Just observe how the festive atmosphere of a party or any pleasant gathering can suddenly change, if two people, or a group of people, in attendance, begin to argue. No matter how trivial the issue, as long as it is happening in the presence of others, the mood of the others is affected. Sometimes, several guests will leave earlier than they had intended to leave. For them, the party is over!
“Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity” (James 3:5, 6, emphasis supplied). And so in life, oftentimes the person who starts a fire is destroyed by it!
May God help us to watch our tongue!
