Jesus, Our Peace

How good and pleasant it is when brothers [and sisters] live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes. It is as if the dew of Hermon was falling on Mt. Zion. For there the Lord bestows His blessing, even life forevermore (Psalm 133, NIV)

Merciful God, please speak to our hearts today, as You spoke in days of old, and bring us so close to Your side that nothing will be able to interrupt our peace and harmony; for Christ’s sake. Amen

I am convinced that when God created our world His intentions were that the man and the woman would live together in perfect harmony, and also with the rest of creation. Scripture tells us that “the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2: 15). It also tells us that humankind was created “in the image of God,” and made “to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground” (Genesis 1: 26).

If the man and the woman, had peace within, that peace would be seen, and felt, throughout the entire creation. They would experience perfect harmony that comes as a direct result of peacefulness. They would do nothing that would in any way harm any of God’s creatures, and therefore, the entire ecosystem would be allowed to function as it was designed to function, in perfect harmony. I believe that that is one of the main characteristics of heaven, harmony. Could that be one of the reasons why God created humankind in His image, and after His likeness? Was it with the intention that the same harmony that exists among the members of the Godhead would exist between Adam and Eve, and permeate the entire creation? When there is peace in the life, there will be peace in the home, in the church, in the school, in the office, in the society, in the world.

If securing peace is as simple as that, why isn’t our world a more peaceful place? Jeremiah offers us a hint: “My people have committed two sins, they have forsaken [M]e, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2: 13). How can we expect to have peace without the Source? If sin has deprived us of our peace there is only one way to regain it, by allowing Jesus to come in with His sinless presence and fill our lives. How else can we expect to experience peace having forsaken the only true Source? And if that was not bad enough, we have tried to create our own. We have invented all sorts of “do it yourself” peace methods, without realizing that peace is not a method, it is a person, “For [H]e [H]imself is our peace” (Ephesians 2: 14).

Today, if you are willing to give Jesus your broken cistern, He will gladly come and fill your life with His PEACEful presence. Then our homes will become the little heavens on earth that God intended them to be, because peace will be the order of the day
