Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. Psalm 146: 3, 4, NRSV.
Heavenly Father, please come close and honor us with Your heavenly presence. We give You thanks in the name of Jesus. Amen.
I am almost sure, that many of You will agree with me when I say, that that is good advise. And it is not that people do not want to be trustworthy. Sometimes we just take on more than we can handle, and therefore, we cannot fulfill some of the promises we make. But the advise of the LORD goes further than just our dealings with regular human beings. He mentions that we are not even to put our trust in princes, who have the means, and oftentimes, the authority, to keep their promises. This statement is followed by “in mortals,” as if to remind us that princes, are also mortals.
The other thought is that eventually, they will return to to the earth, when their breath departs. That is the lot of mortals, we die and return to the dust from where we were taken. It is comforting to know that help, true help, only comes from God! Therefore, the best advise, is to put our trust in God, who neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121: 3, 4)!
Blessings!
