Stay In the Moment

Dear God, here we are in Your presence ready to learn from You, and of You. Please teach us I pray. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. (Matthew 6: 34a).  NKJV

This is the first in a series that I have entitled “Messages From My Walks with God. You will notice that walk is plural. That is because I am not referring to my life’s journey, but to the walks I take every day.  For years I had tried to develop the habit of walking, to no avail. I would walk faithfully for a week or two, and then something would happen and I would stop – promising myself to resume my walks the following week, which I never did until several weeks or months had gone by.

About a month ago, I invited my husband to develop a walking plan for both of us. That very night we began our walks. It did not take me long to recognize that walking late in the  evening was not going to work for me. But I did want to walk, and since my working hours are flexible, and Herman’s are not, we decided that I would walk in the mornings when my energy level is at its best. Herman would continue to walk in the evening. Little did I realize then, that God was getting ready to teach me some very valuable lessons in life – through these daily walks.

One of the first lessons I learned was that we should stay in the moment. One morning while I was walking along as briskly as I could I began to think about some of the things I would do when I returned home. Soon I realized that I was not walking as briskly as before. I was losing both energy and speed. Why was this happening? Then it hit me, I was using the energy that God had provided for that moment – in the future! I was trying to draw from a check that had not even been written!

As soon as I became aware of this and returned to the present moment with the determination to stay there and enjoy the sights and sounds around me, my speed increased and so did my energy level. No wonder Jesus said:  ” ‘.  .  . Sufficient for the day is its own trouble’ ”  (Matthew 6: 34b).  Let us follow the Lord’s advice by staying in the moment,  and enjoying the blessings!
