Walking With God

And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Genesis 5: 24, NKJV.

Dear God as we look to You today for a closer walk, may we hear Your voice and heed it. This is our prayer in the holy name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.

This was my second week. I was accustomed to the distance I was walking because for quite a while this had been my route, until, like on other occasions, something had happened that had interrupted my walking, and I had simply given up. This time, however, I was determined to continue with my program. I knew that in order for me to be successful I must develop a routine that felt comfortable. I prayed and asked God for the strength not to give up in the face of interruptions, stress, or difficulties of any kind. I was going to do my part in answering that prayer.

Immediately after my time alone with God I would get dressed, do my stretches and then go walking. One day I felt impressed to put on my walking gear before sitting down with the Lord. I implemented this change to the program. As simple as it may seem, it made a big difference. Just the fact that I was already dressed, made it easier to continue. I realize now that God was actually enabling me to stick with the program by working on my mind set. Encouraging me to make decisions that made the going easier.

I knew I would eventually be adding distance to my walk, but I figured it would be at least another week or two. Nevertheless, as I drew near the end of the first week it was obvious that God was actually encouraging me to go farther. One day the nudging was so real that I smiled and said, Okay God, I heard you. Beginning next week I will add a  block to my walking. I did. Soon I realized that I was expected to go even farther. I had not planned on doing this, but it was the event that inspired this message.

Before the week was out, I left home as usual one morning. The Lord and I were deep in conversation. I had my umbrella (I need one for this Southern California sun) tilted toward the front, so I could see where I was stepping, but not where I was headed. This was one wonderful walk! It must have been one of the days that I left home earlier than usual, because I was not feeling the heat as I normally would. Suddenly, I noticed that I was passing a grocery store that I had not noticed in my walks before. I lifted my umbrella to get a good look at my surroundings and could not believe where I was. I had added two extra blocks to my walk. I was now at almost the double of my original distance, and had not even felt the difference!

That made me think of God and Enoch. Enoch was so comfortable in God’s presence that when they met for their daily walk together, time seemed to stand still. And one day it actually did. Enoch walked so close to God, that time became eternity. Without realizing it, Enoch had travelled through time to another dimension. I can imagine him looking around and saying, I do not remember seeing streets like these before! Could it be that I have overlooked this unusual tree when I passed here the other day? Or, this is the purest air I have ever breathed!

He had walked right into God’s sphere. So can you and I. We can start living in eternity through a personal and loving relationship with the Lord. Even now, we can start breathing the pure atmosphere of eternal life. Begin to walk with God today and experience the difference!
