There Is No Rock But Our God!

As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. Psalm 18: 30-32

Heavenly Father it is wonderful to know that in the time of need You will always be there. May we take hope in this knowledge; for Christ’s sake. Amen.

This is our fourth day in this study. And everyday we discover something new that increases our faith in The Rock! He is the Only Rock. He is our Deliverer, our strength, our fortress and stronghold, the horn of our salvation, and our salvation, our shield, and so much more! Today we reiterate the fact that there is no Rock but our God. We also add two characteristics that can only be attributed to God. His way is perfect! His word is flawless!

In yesterday;s devotional David referred to God as his strength. In today’s devotional he acknowledges God as the One who supplies him with strength. It made me think of the second letter of the apostle Paul to the Corinthians. In chapter 12 of that letter, under divine inspiration, Paul wrote:

“And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.  And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” ‘ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong (7-9. Emphasis provided).

Power in the wrong hands can be a very dangerous thing. When king David was humble in his own eyes, power did not represent a problem for him. He killed the giant Goliath with one of the five smooth stones in his sling shot, and gave all the glory to God. That was faith-generated-power granted to a little shepherd boy named David as he relied solely on God to accomplish this remarkable feat.

Fast forward, the little shepherd boy has been promoted to shepherd of the Lord’s flock, with limitless power to take whatever he wants from whoever he wants and eliminate anyone who stands in his way. This has now become presumptuous-reckless-use of God-entrusted power! And the results speak for themselves.

Now, years later, his sins confessed and forgiven, king David realizes, like Paul, that to let God control the power is a much safer way of life that leaves no regrets.

He has also proven that it is God who makes his path secure. Even though David was feared as a “bloody” man of war, and known for his prowess in battle, that did not prevent him from having numerous enemies. As a matter of fact, it would seem that it served to increase the number of his foes.

Thank God, David was willing to “taste and see” that there is no Rock but God and He protects those who go to Him for refuge!

So can we!
