My Rock – My Glory!

In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. Psalm 62:7

Precious Lord, our Savior, and our God. We look to You, in whom all our help is found. Please keep us close to Your side, and be glorified in us. In the name of Jesus the Christ we pray. Amen.

In Psalm 62, from which our text for meditation is taken today, David announces that his glory is in God. To get a better idea of what the psalmist was saying I went to the original Hebrew word for glory, pronounced kawbode, meaning honor, glory, majesty, wealth.

Was David saying that any honor, or glory, or majesty, ascribed to him, really belonged to The Rock? That all the wealth that he had acquired had been given to him by his God? To answer these questions as sincerely as possible, let us look at some incidents in the life of David, and his responses; first as a youth and then as an adult.

As a Youth. (The battle with Goliath)

Then David said to the Philistine, ‘“You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands” ‘ ” (1 Samuel 17:45-47. As an Adult. (David’s prayer of appreciation to God when He established his kingdom)

“Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: ‘ “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord God; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come. Is this the manner of man, O Lord God? Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord God, know Your servant. For Your word’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them. Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears . . . .’ “And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.” ‘ ” ‘ “ (2 Samuel 7:18-22, 28, 29. Emphasis provided).

If there was anyone who could truly say that, in God is my glory, it was David! Time and again he observed as God blessed him in ways that he did not even dream of, taking him from the pasture to the palace!

Even after he fell, David knew that only The Rock could lift him up, place his feet on solid ground, and fulfill His promise, that through his lineage, the reign of the Messiah would establish his kingdom, not just “for a great while to come.” But forever!

Could there be greater glory in any other, but The Rock?
