Unfailing Waters!

The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. Isaiah 58:11.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the day You invited me to drink from that “spring of water whose waters do not fail.” May I never stop drinking! This is my earnest prayer in the name of my Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

I have never been lost in the desert. So perhaps I cannot really appreciate what it feels like to be searching for a spring of water in a dry land. There are at least two recorded instances in the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness, when they arrived at a place of rest and could find no drinking water. On both occasions they murmured against Moses (Exodus 15:22-25), and also against the Lord (Ibid, 17:1-7).

They had left Egypt less than two months before (Exodus 16:1), and had seen God’s Almighty hand at work in the dividing of the Red Sea. Had they not noticed His power over, and control of, water?

Had they not seen how His prophet could turn the waters of the great Nile to blood? Or had the look-alike-stunt of the magicians in Egypt confused them into believing that this was not a miracle?

Whatever the cause, the need for water was so great that the people murmured even against the Great God who had rescued them from Egyptian ondage! Thirst is a very powerful sensation. And an abnormal lack of it can cause people to become dehydrated, which could lead to death. I know firsthand that this is so, because I almost died from dehydration.

As much as the woman of Samaria hated coming to the well to get water, her need of the precious liquid was greater than her dread of meeting the gossipers, and feeling their gaze upon her or hearing their unkind remarks.

What an unforgettable day that was when she came to the well and found a Stranger there who asked her for a drink of water! Everything about that encounter was different from anything she had ever experienced before, and though she did not know it then, her life would never be the same again!

The One who spoke to her in such respectful tones was a Jew! This was anything but normal!

He said He had water, but the well was deep, and she saw nothing with which He could draw the water.

This water, He said, would quench her thirst forever!

She just had to have this water! So she listened to Him. And as He told her all about her past, her thirst was quenched!

So she left her water-pot. She was not going to need it, ever again!

He had given her – her first taste of living water!

Like the woman at the well there are many, both men and women, who are thirsty. They believe that what they need is someone or something to quench their thirst. In fact they do need Someone – His name is Jesus! And they do need Something – It is referred to as The Water of Life or Living Waters!

Jesus is both Who and What you need:

” ‘ “Jesus answered and said to her,  ‘ “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water” ‘ ” ‘ ” (John 4:10).

” ‘ “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” ‘ ” (John 7: 38).

“And He said to me, ‘ “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts” ‘ ” (Revelation 21:6).

Are you thirsty? Then come to Jesus. Your soul will never suffer a drought again!
